About
Who?
Trying to define yourself is like trying to bite your own teeth.
Alan W. Watts
First and foremost, I’m someone who loves fiction. Always have, always will. I was never without a book when I was younger, and now that I’m older (and don’t have as much time on my hands) I love watching movies and TV, searching for that moment of brilliance that makes you go “Wow!”
I am also a writer. An apprentice storyteller, still learning his trade. I remember as early as the age of 12 writing down during a school assignment that I wanted to author. The desire has never left me since, and I don’t think it will – even on the day I’m lowered into the ground in a small wooden box.
What?
Fiction is life with the dull bits left out.
Clive James
Everything on this site is fictional … except maybe me!
As fiction can come in all shapes and sizes – books, movies, TV, video games, etc – you can expect to find an equally wide range of topics covered on this site. Being only one person, I have neither the time nor the energy to write about everything fictional. But from time to time, I will post reviews and comments about the latest fiction I’m enjoying.
You’ll also find many topics on the art and craft of writing and storytelling. This is where I will capture ideas, suggestions and advice that I come across as I teach myself to be a better writer. So expect to see various topics on creating characters, plot, setting, and theme.
Why?
The best way to learn is to teach.
Frank Oppenheimer
I don’t think of myself as a teacher of writing. If that ever comes, it’s going to be many years down the track, after I have run out of things to write and stories to tell.
What I am is someone that knows that I have a lot shitload to learn about the art and craft of writing. Put simply, I want to learn by teaching myself. Many of the articles found in this blog will be me waxing lyrical about various topics to do with fiction, especially the writing of it.
And if, on this journey of discovery, I happen to impart something of use to other writers and lovers of fiction, all the better.
